Saxony Carpet

Carpeting comes in different styles and colors and is made from many different materials. At Floor Coverings International West Houston, we have a large variety of carpeting to choose from, making the selection process challenging. It’s always a good idea to brush up on your carpet knowledge before beginning the planning process. See below for more details on saxony carpeting.

Loop & Cut Pile

Carpeting can be divided into two main categories: loop pile and cut pile. As their names imply, loop pile carpeting weaves strands of fibers into a backing material in loop shapes, while cut pile is made by cutting the loops and allowing one end of the fiber strands to stand up from the backing material. It is likely that the majority of the wall-to-wall carpets you have seen have been some form of cut pile carpeting. It is sometimes referred to as “standard” carpeting.

Straight, Twisted, and TexturedCarpet Tracks

Within the cut pile category there are other subcategories. One of those is saxony, which is a type of cut pile that has shorter strands, a dense weave, and a more uniform look. A further division in the saxony category can be made between straight strand and twisted saxony. A straight strand version will give a consistent appearance across the surface of the carpet, but it will also tend to show footprints and vacuum marks as those strands get pushed around in different directions. A twisted saxony has a more varied appearance to begin with and will be better at hiding marks from usage. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as “trackless” carpet. There are also textured varieties, which allow for variance in the length of the fiber strands, creating a speckled look that is best for disguising use and wear.

Ideal Usage

Because of its dense weave and lush, soft feel, saxony carpet is ideal for use in bedrooms and living rooms. It will feel soft, warm, and cozy underfoot. Twisted and textured varieties don’t quite offer the luxurious look and velvety feel of straight saxony, but they are becoming popular for home usage due to their more rustic aesthetic appeal and greater ability to hide tracks. Saxony looks good today, should stand up to a fair amount of use, and will continue to be in style for years to come.
